4 Hour Flagger Course Details

Our 4-Hour Flagger course is taught through the National Safety Council, and will educate students in the Federal and New York State policies, procedures and standards. Training will review general work zone safety while focusing on identifying and preventing hazardous conditions. The topics discussed in this course provide a thorough understanding of the proper signals and safe flagging techniques specific to New York regulations, flagging procedures and proper use of required equipment, and how to coordinate traffic movement through the work zone. Students will have an opportunity to review flagging skills using hands-on training and classroom activities.

Additional Details

  • Receive and communicate specific instructions clearly, firmly and courteously.
  •  Move and maneuver quickly in order to avoid danger from errant vehicles.
  • Control signaling devices (such as paddles and flags) in order to provide clear and positive guidance to drivers approaching a temporary traffic control (TTC) zone in frequently changing situations.
  • Understand and apply safe traffic control practices, sometimes in stressful or emergency situations.
  • Recognize dangerous traffic situations and warn workers in sufficient time to avoid injury.
  • PPE
  • Proper Position of the Flagger Station; flaggers should stand on the shoulder of the road or in the closed lane prior to stopping traffic.
  • Proper use of flags, stop and slow paddles and Traffic Control Devices (Cones, Drums, etc.)
  • Work Zone Safety
  • Proper TTC (temporary Traffic Control) setup; Flagger stations are set up based on speed of traffic and other factors affecting the visibility of the flagger.
  • Proper Advance Warning Signs Position
CEU Credit’s: 0.4 To earn a certificate of completion and a permanent card, student must do the following:
  • 100% attendance for the Work Zone Flagger Certification Classes
  • Completion of Continuing Education and Training Registration Form
  • Active participation in all class exercises (determined by course instructor)
  • Completion of required pre-and post-quiz assessment
  • As applicable, achievement of minimum passing score on required end-of-course examination
  • Participation and submittal of end-of-course evaluation form (must provide name on form to receive credit)

A plethora of methods will be used, such as auditory, visual and kinesthetic methods to ensure learning. This includes the program’s PowerPoint, related lectures, testing/quizzing, hands-on activities, and classroom discussions.

Course Completion Card

Students that successfully complete the course will be issued a wallet-sized completion card and a certificate of completion.
