Participants need to be able to communicate with the instructor in the language the course is held in.
Workers at uncontrolled hazardous waste operations and those involved in emergency response actions must receive eight hours of HAZWOPER refresher training every year.
As OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.120 requires, if you completed 40-Hour HAZWOPER training or 24-Hour HAZWOPER training, you must take the 8-Hour HAZWOPER Refresher course annually.
Roles at HAZWOPER sites that require refresher training usually include:
- Equipment operators
- General laborers
- Hazardous materials technicians
- Hazardous materials specialists
- Hazardous materials supervisors
- On-scene incident commanders
- Other general site workers
- On-site management and supervisory personnel
Workers must complete eight hours of HAZWOPER Refresher training within 12 months of the anniversary date of their previous HAZWOPER training. Those that fail to meet this requirement may have to repeat their initial 40-Hour training.
The certification for the 8-Hour HAZWOPER course is valid for only 12 months, as you’ll need to retake the HAZWOPER Refresher course to keep your certification. If you miss the annual deadline, you may be required to complete your original 40-hour or 24-hour HAZWOPER training again.
