This course is an elective course that can help fulfill the requirement for an individual applying for a Site Safety Training Card. THIS IS AN AWARENESS-LEVEL TRAINING ONLY and does not provide any other qualification or authorization outside of the Site Safety Training Card. In order to continue to operate in the City of New York, the designated construction worker is required to complete a minimum number of hours of approved site safety training and to carry site safety identification cards as proof of completion of the training (As per New York City Local Law 196 of 2017 also known as ‘LL196’ or ‘Local Law’). This course provides two hours towards the satisfaction of that requirement.
- 100% attendance for the 2-HR Drug & Alcohol Awareness class: 2 hours of instruction time
- Completion of Continuing Education and Training Registration Form
- Active participation in all class exercises (determined by instructor)
- Completion of required quiz assessment
- As applicable, achievement of minimum passing score (70%) on required end-of-course examination
- Participation and submittal of end-of-course evaluation form (must provide name on form to receive credit)
- Make up time is not allowed. Students who miss time from any individual session must reschedule and attend the full training course.
PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of OSHA 30-Hour in Construction Safety & Health, prior to enrolling in this course. See Here
Participants need to be able to communicate with the instructor in the language the course is held in.
Substance Abuse Disorders – 15 minutes
This section will review substance abuse disorders, how they impact the brain, and common misconceptions related to them.
Drug and Alcohol Statistics – 15 minutes
This section will cover statistics related to drug and alcohol use, and how prevalent they are in the industry.
Drug & Alcohol Use in the Construction Industry – 15 minutes
Will cover the impact of drug and alcohol use in the construction industry, such as workers’ judgement, decision-making, memory, etc.
Consequences of Addiction on the Body – 15 minutes
Will cover the social, economic, criminal, and associated diseases related to drug use.
Alcohol Use & Its Effects on the Body – 15 minutes
Will cover how “one” drink impacts the body and how much “one” drink is. Will also cover health and safety issues regarding alcohol abuse.
Prevention and Control of Drugs and Alcohol – 15 minutes
Will cover the behavioral dependencies of drug and alcohol use.
How to Avoid Drug and Alcohol Dependency – 30 minutes
Will cover the resources available to students should they require help with drug or alcohol addiction.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this drug and alcohol awareness training , the student will be able to:
Understand that dependence disorders can happen to normal people (erase stigma)
Describe illicit use of drugs and the effects of drugs and alcohol in workplaces
Understand the effects of drug and alcohol use in the construction industry
Describe the impact and effects of drug and alcohol use on construction sites and in personal life.
Explain various drugs and their effects on the human body.
Explain relevant information concerning alcohol use and its effects on the human body.
Understand prevention and control of drugs and alcohol in the workplace
Understand adverse synergistic use of drugs along with alcohol
Audience
Required curriculum for any worker or supervisor employed in NYC within the Five Boroughs on projects requiring a Construction Super, Site Safety Manager, Site Safety Coordinator, Concrete Safety Manager, or Competent Person. Also, applicable to individuals seeking a more comprehensive understanding of their specific responsibilities for initiating and carrying out drug-free workplace policies and procedures in the workplace or on a job site.
Upon succesful completion of the course, students will receive a certificate of completion.
